Why should I worry about accessibility?

Well apart from improving the user experience for everyone and being the the right thing to do... what is the main driver?

It is the Law

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) aims to end discrimination which many disabled people face by providing them with rights in areas of:

  • Employment
  • Access to Goods, Facilities and Services
  • Education
  • Public Transport

Act has been amended many times since, e.g.2004 unlawful for all employers to discriminate… regardless of the number of people they employ.

Other Drivers

  • Disability Rights Commission Act 1999 - the DRC ensure enforcement of DDA / support individuals in getting the rights.
  • most companies now have accessibility consideration built into their Compliance and Diversity policies, and accessibility is a big issue when it comes to Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Finally... you are likely to already have employees with disabilities... or will do in the future.
